Surround Panner

panner

The Surround Panner was created for a multimedia show by the band Cipher. As the show was to take place in a cinema they wanted to make use of the surround system in the venue. To this end I built a Pd patch that allows the user to move 2 channels of sound around a 4 speaker set-up individually using joystick controls. I also added in some preset movements and the ability to record your own presets on the fly.

The patch is set up for use with an Xbox360 control pad as they have a good number of buttons, but you could easily edit it to fit your own needs.

skuffle

skuffle

Skuffle is an installation commissioned by the birobox workshop project. Birobox perform music using live sampling, loop pedals etc... I wanted to make a piece that would reflect this method of working in some way...

The result is Skuffle, software that remix's live audio inputs.

The Skuffle program consists of 3 samplers and 3 sequencers, each sampler grabs a new sound from an input (in this case sounds captured from the main room of the event, mainly bands and DJ's) and plays this sample back according to its sequencer.

The sequencers themselves combine a few methods for generative composition.

bdlooper

bdloop

The b&d looper was created as a performance tool for my bury&disinter live shows. The core of the programe was developed with Tom Betts and then slowly altered and "enhanced" by myself over the years.

The actual patch is made up of 4 loopers, each one of these operates pretty much like an old fashioned tape echo unit, balancing the level of feedback creates the infinate loop. Each looper is tied into the same clock so they stay in sync, although this can be dissabled allowing all sorts of Steve Reich phase music shenanigans.

bury&disinter

bdlogotrue
bury&disinter was (is?) a solo music experiment. After years of making pure electronica as wauvenfold I needed a break from rigid sequencing. To this end i started making kind of solo guitar "shoegazer" music. The idea behind the project was to use guitar as the only source, which led to using various extended playing techniques and processing to create sounds and textures not normally associated with the instrument.

I had a few releases under this moniker, several on Japanese label Duotone and one for Static Caravan in the UK.

wauvenfold

wauvenfold
Wauvenfold is myself and Tom Hill. In 2000 the band Brothers in Sound asked if i would do a remix for their forthcoming release, I got Tom in on it and thus wauvenfold were born. The remix was accepted and through that we signed with wichita recordings and eventually went on to sign publishing with EMI.
